The other night I stopped at Ponderosa Lounge and Grill at Jubitz Truck Stop. This country bar is located a few minutes north of my vacation rental. I heard it was recently remodeled and wanted to check it out. It is a beautiful place. They have free lessons Thursdays to Saturdays (call to confirm as they often have popular bands performing instead). I thought the food was pretty good also.

Last Saturday morning my friend Julie and I decided to go to Cadillac Cafe in the Lloyd District. This top breakfast spot is just a few miles from Portland Piedmont Guesthouse. We arrived at opening in order to beat the rush as there can often be a wait I would rate this as one of the top three breakfast restaurants in Portland. Be sure to check out the pink Cadillac in back. Julie ordered the Hazelnut French Toast which is their famous dish while I ordered Smoked Salmon Benedict, substituting roasted tomatoes for the potatoes since I am on the Ketogenic diet. Both dishes were fabulous!

Today I attended the Memorial Weekend Celebration at Cubanisimo Vineyards near Salem. This is an annual event at the vineyard that is celebrated “Cuban Style” with salsa lessons and dancing, a live band, wine tasting and catered Cuban cuisine in a beautiful setting. This event is definitely a fun thing to do in Portland. I even learned some new salsa moves! The event occurs all weekend 11 A.M. – 4 P.M. as well as on Memorial Day. The band was Pure Vida, a Portland-based band and they were excellent.
Other fun things to do at the vineyard include monthly Salsa dancing lessons, an Eclipse Party weekend and Zydeco dancing June 16 with a live band.

There are many things do do near Portland Oregon. If you take a drive from Portland to Astoria at the Beach you will first pass through the small town of Linnton. There is a wonderful restaurant in Linnton with great Chinese food called The Decoy. After you leave Linnton you will next approach Sauvie Island. This amazing place is like stepping back in time and is a fun thing to do near Portland. It is a wonderful place to bicycle. Make sure you stop at Sauvie Island Blueberry Farm or Kruger’s Farm Market. Farther down U.S. 30, as you pass the town of Rainier, you will see two viewpoints on the right of the valley and the Lewis and Clark Bridge. As you proceed to the coast you will see Trojan Park on the right with great fishing. Finally you will see a sign to Jones Beach on the right (there are no rest rooms). The road is bumpy leading to the beach. Also you will see a sign to Nicolai Mountain OHV Riding Area on the left. This would be a fun thing to do near Portland if you have a four-wheeler.

There are many fun things to do for families in Portland Oregon. For example, families with children will enjoy the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and Tillicum Crossing nearby, a pedestrian and bicycle-only bridge. There are also several fun things to do for families at Washington Park, including the Oregon Zoo and Children's Museum. Washington Park has miles of hiking trails families with children will enjoy. Families with kids can rent a bike at one of the many Biketown locations around town. Another kid-friendly fun thing to do for families is Peninsula Park Rose Garden, located just six blocks from Portland Piedmont Guesthouse in Northeast Portland. This block-long park includes the first rose garden in the City of Portland, a large water fountain where families with kids can relax, a gazebo where many weddings are held and tennis courts. There is also a large playground for families with kids to enjoy. Another unique fun thing for families with kids to do in Portland Oregon is to take the Portland Aerial Tram. The tram is located on the 9th floor of the Kohler Pavilion at Oregon Health Sciences University. Families with kids will enjoy the views of the Portland area as the tram takes them across I-5 and the river. Families with kids will enjoy Waterfront Park along the Willamette River downtown. The park has many summer festivals for families with kids to enjoy. Another free activity for families with kids to do in Portland is to take the stairs to the top of the volcano at Mt Tabor park. This is the longest continuous series of steps (400+) in Portland. The views at the top are amazing!

“Our family stayed at the Portland Piedmont Guesthouse for a week and a
half for a January wedding. The owner, Gary, could not have been more
welcoming and helpful. He volunteered to put grab bars in the bathroom
that our elderly Mom would use, and it made such a difference for her. He
went out of his way to accommodate my husband’s allergies and sensitivity
to scents by specifically checking on what products could be used to clean
prior to our arrival. The evening of our arrival was just after a period
of snow followed by rain which had created icy conditions. Gary helped us
clear the ice to try to make it safer for our elderly Mom to enter. Gary
continued to check with us throughout the visit to be sure we didn’t need
anything and was willing to provide advice on restaurants, sights and much
more. You would not find a kinder, more helpful host. The house itself is
charming , very well supplied, super clean and very comfortable with an
excellent location that is convenient to the airport, downtown, the
Alberta district, the Columbia River and everything else. We settled in
and had an excellent stay. We’ll be sure to book the Guesthouse again when
we visit family in the area.”

I discovered Sheridan Fruit Company a few years ago. This specialty market on Portland’s booming inner east side is a gem. For breakfast you can try a delicious poached egg English biscuit sandwich for $4.50. For lunch order the famous Philly cheese steak sandwich at the outdoor grill. Their hummus was recently recognized as the best hummus in Portland. Their deli has over 30 varieties of handcrafted sausage. Definitely a must-see! Sheridan Fruit Company is located at 408 SE 3rd Street in Portland. Their phone is 503-236-2114.

The Portland Farmers Market occurs daily at various locations around town. The main market is Saturdays from 8:30 A.M. to 2 P.M. downtown in the South Park Blocks by Portland State University. There is live music weekly performed by local artists and a cooking demonstration at 10 A.M.. Be sure to try the outstanding breakfasts at Verde Cocina including the Buenos Dias Breakfast (pictured). It is a delicious dish containing two scrambled eggs with grilled veggies over white bean bean garbanzo mash topped with more veggies, ranchero salsa and locally grown and smoked bacon (the best I have ever tasted). For more information go to http://www.portlandfarmersmarket.org/our-markets/psu/.
The market nearest Portland Piedmont Guesthouse is the King Farmers market which is open Sundays between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. It is head at NE 7th and NE Wygant. For more information go to http://www.portlandfarmersmarket.org/our-markets/king/.

On Friday evening July 11 I attended the outdoor concert at Fernhill Park. This is part of a summer parks concert series sponsored by Portland Parks and Recreation. The band was Trixy and the Nasties playing Diva-powered Motown and Funk. Outstanding music, very danceable and the Mediterranean cuisine at Aladdin’s Cafe was delicious! Concerts will continue at Fernhill park each Friday until August 1 followed by a special concert on August 5.

On July 4 I attended the Fourth of July BBQ at Besaw’s. This is the second year Besaw’s has held this event. The event was held in the garden next to the restaurant. I had a Laney Family Farms cheeseburger, baked beans, fresh fruit and a lemon pound cake. The food was delicious and the event had wonderful ambiance with live music in a beautiful setting.
